Welcome to St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church. We gladly welcome you to our church, trusting that if you are seeking Christ you will find Him here, if sorrowing you will receive comfort, if troubled in spirit you will receive the blessings of peace, if discouraged you will rejoice in hope, if friendless find companionship and Christian love. That these and other blessings may be your portion is our prayer.
Parish History
St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church was dedicated on April 14, 1918. The church was located at Reynolds and Second Streets and the cost was approximately $2,200. St. Elizabeth was a mission of Sacred Heart Church. In 1921, when the church was finished, it was discovered there was no confessional and sacristy. Scrap lumber was used to build the confessional. Father Connally became the first pastor, remaining here from 1918 until 1921.
Father Frank Gronotte came to St. Elizabeth, December, 1939. A new church, now located at the corner of 5th street and N. Almond St., was dedicated on December 8, 1940. The original bells from St. Elizabeth Church were once at Sacred Heart Church, Alice.
Msgr. E.J. Miller came to St. Elizabeth in June, 1942, and stayed for twenty years. The rectory, school and parish hall were built while Msgr Miller was priest. September, 1949 marked the beginning of classes at St. Elizabeth School. The school had eight grades and was staffed by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Approximately 200 students attended.
From December 1980 to April, 1981, substitutes served the church, among them Father Lambert Eckelhoff and Father Leonard Pivonka. Father Pivonka was ordained Rev. Monsignor Leonard Pivonka, JCD, Prelate of Honor by the authority of His Holiness Pope John Paul II on May 12, 1996. Msgr. Pivonka came to St. Elizabeth in 2000 and presently serves as pastor.
