Committee members Lelia Keliehor explained the history and purpose of the Advent Wreath; Gloria Adami lit the first Advent candle and Sandra Carlisle led the Advent candle lighting ceremony.
Advent marks the beginning of the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar year. It's the beginning of the four weeks of spiritual preparation in anticipation of the coming of our Lord. In Christian symbolism the wreath stands for eternity. Lighting of the Advent Wreath is a simple way to start a tradition of family worship in the home.
The four candles, three in the penitential purple color and one rose color candle lit the thrid week, the joyful week, signify the light of hope, light of peace, light of joy and light of love. The fifth week a white candle is lit in celebration of Christmas, the Light of Christ.
